Early Years Foundation Stage
Our EYFS at Loscoe C of E Primary School and Nursery
The Early Years Foundation Stage at Loscoe C of E Primary School and Nursery
" Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand."
The EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) at Loscoe Primary School & Nursery consists of two classes; our nursery children the Squirrels, (based in a separate building on the school site) and our Reception cohort Alps Class.
Our whole school curriculum is based upon our vision "We may be small but together we can make a big difference". Across the EYFS we are committed to supporting every child in reaching their full potential by providing the best possible start to their learning journey, whilst ensuring that the environment is a safe and happy place for all, offering exciting learning opportunities.
At Loscoe Primary School & Nursery, we firmly believe that every child should be given a ‘voice’. To this end, we are passionate in developing early communication and language skills in our Early Years setting. Staff are trained in how to effectively encourage children to speak and every opportunity is taken to develop children’s language skills through high quality interactions.
We provide a wide range of experiences of the world around us and high-quality teaching and learning which provides children with a firm foundation of knowledge and skills as they move into Key stage one on the next important step in their learning journey. Our 'Loscoe Promise' ensures that all of our children are able to engage in a range of planned 'hands on' enhancement learning experiences. This building upon Cultural Capital, broadening children's knowledge, experience and developing awe and wonder of the world around them.
Our children are eager to learn and are positive about learning and achieving to the highest levels. All staff share a positive growth mind set which is encouraged with the children from entry to Nursery and Reception. Our children quickly become aware that we learn from making mistakes and they become confident in having a go at almost anything! Our children become resilient, confident and independent as learners during the time spent in the EYFS.
The New EYFS Curriculum and the four key principles underpin our EYFS curriculum for children attending Loscoe C of E Primary School and Nursery. Throughout our EYFS we aim to provide enjoyable and challenging activities that ensure every child makes progress in their learning at their own individual pace. Our Early Years Staff members continually assess how the environment can be adapted to best cater for the ever changing interests and needs of each child. We follow a thematic curriculum, proving learning across all seven areas of learning. We have carefully selected the topics to cover a good coverage and breadth of learning. Learning in the Early Years provides the building blocks for skills and knowledge developed as your child then progresses through our school.
In order to encourage an early love of reading, we have adopted the ‘Core Book’ and ‘Core Rhymes’ approach in our EYFS. We hope that by the time the children leave EYFS they have an in-depth knowledge of twelve stories that they are able to retell. The core books are chosen for their use of repetition, story structure and potential to trigger children’s imaginations. Our Core Rhymes are chosen from traditional nursery rhymes and songs. Our Core Book and Rhyme list can be viewed in the document below.
We strive to develop good relationships with parents before children start school with excellent transition procedures. Throughout the child’s time in Nursery and Reception, we value the contributions made by parents to their child’s education and we consistently share information to provide the best possible support for children to make good progress.
Our safeguarding systems are rigorous and as a team we work hard to ensure that the children in our care are safe and feel happy every day.
