Outdoor Learning
At Loscoe C of E Primary School and Nursery, we truly value outdoor learning and try to incorporate it throughout our curriculum. We are fortunate to have a large outside space that has a woodland area, a pond, some raised beds and a campfire circle. This means that not only are we able to frequently teach and learn outside but our children are able to take part in outdoor activities throughout the year.
Our children enjoy building dens, mini-beast hunting and spending time in nature every break and lunchtime. They also enjoy participating in outdoor learning most weeks. We have an outdoor learning focus every other term. This skill, for example, outdoor cooking, progresses through the classes. This means when a child leaves us, they should have experienced lots of different outdoor skills which will have helped them increase in confidence, maturity and self-esteem. Find our outdoor learning progression overview below.
Being outdoors is a proven way to improve your mental wellbeing. As a school, we believe above all, that it is our duty to help children develop the skills they need to be resilient, well-rounded and healthy members of society. By instilling the values of outdoor learning and forest schools, we are helping our children take care of their own mental and physical wellbeing, by allowing them to be explore independence, challenge and problem solving.
We have a qualified forest school teacher and another who is in training this year. As a school, we are committed to ensuring all our children get to enjoy outdoor learning as a big part of their time with us.
